Restoring Smiles With Implants

At Fresh Meadows Dental Care, Dr. Farid Hakimzadeh replaces teeth and restores patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel just like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

An implant is placed over a series of appointments because of the healing time required.  Implants are titanium screws inserted through an incision in the gum. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.  After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second minor procedure.  The doctor may need to expose the head of the implant by removing some gum tissue, and the crown will be screwed to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Sleep Apnea and Alcohol

Research shows that alcohol and sleep apnea don't mix. Alcohol makes it hard to get a good night sleep and because people to tend to wake up more frequently during the night. Many people will use alcohol to help them fall asleep at night, not knowing the side effects. After a few days your body will adjust to the alcohol and no longer will put you asleep unless you start drinking excess and unhealthy amounts.

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder where breathing starts and stops during rest, this occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat relax. Because alcohol is a muscle relaxant, the muscles at the back of your throat ease even more than usual, causing extra-severe symptoms while sleeping and affects breathing.

For patients who are casual drinkers, it is suggested that patients stop drinking three hours before bed and limit themselves to 1-2 drinks daily to prevent a restless night sleep.

Dangers of Tartar Buildup

Dental plaque and dental tartar are two totally different things. Dental plaque is a soft, sticky, film that builds up on teeth and under the gums throughout the day. It contains millions of bacteria and should be brushed away after every meal. When plaque isn’t adequately removed, it will turn into tartar, a hard, calcium deposit that only Dr. Farid Hakimzadeh of Fresh Meadows Dental Care is able to remove.

Tartar buildup may lead to periodontal disease, cavities, discoloration, and tooth sensitivity. Fortunately, all of these conditions can be prevented with a proper oral care routine and improvements in your diet. Bacteria in our mouths thrive off of sugars and carbohydrates that attack the tooth surface. By eating foods that have high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, less plaque will build up in the mouth.  Additionally, it’s important to schedule regular cleanings twice a year to prevent tartar accumulation.
