Mouth Sores and Ulcers

Cankers, cold sores, and other mouth ulcers are common maladies we treat at Fresh Meadows Dental Care. Cold sores may be impossible to avoid and cankers have no known cause, but other kinds of ulcers may be related to a bite problem which Dr. Hakimzadeh will need to examine.

Cankers are large white ulcers which tend to appear in adolescence. They may take several weeks to heal. Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus which is transmitted so easily it is nearly impossible to avoid, but people who have outbreaks should be careful not to allow any fluids from the sore to get into their, or anyone else’s, eyes. Some ulcers are due to misaligned teeth clamping down on soft tissues in the mouth, but they can also be due to hormonal or nutritional disorders.

People with mouth ulcers are advised to avoid acidic and spicy food until the ulcer heals. Although little can be done to speed the healing process, they can apply topical creams to relieve pain and fight bacteria. It is important to visit a doctor for persistent ulcers, in case they are related to a more serious disorder or advanced methods are needed for symptom relief.
