Nitrous Oxide

If you suffer from dental anxiety or wish to take the edge off during a dental procedure, nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedative agent that can alleviate the stress of a dental visit. Once Dr. Farid Hakimzadeh of Fresh Meadows Dental Care gives you the green light for nitrous oxide sedation, this sedative agent is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose.

Receiving nitrous oxide as a form of sedation is the only type that allows you to drive yourself home after the procedure. It is not intended to put you to sleep, and you will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. Overall, you may feel light-headed or a tingling sensation in your arms and legs, but the effects of nitrous oxide will wear off soon after the mask is removed.

Oral Conscious Sedation

At Fresh Meadows Dental Care, our staff has seen many patients who experience some level of anxiety with each dental procedure or appointment. Some patients have had negative experiences with dental procedures that make them anxious, and others may have a sensitive gag reflex that has always made dental work dreadful.  We understand why a dental appointment could be intimidating, but do not want to see patients delaying treatment because of these fears.  Oral conscious sedation is an option we recommend for patients experiencing dental anxiety.

Oral conscious sedation is administered by taking a pill orally before a procedure.  The light sedative relaxes the patient but does not ‘knock out’ the patient, as they remain conscious.  They are brought to an extremely relaxed state, and when the dentist begins working local anesthetic is still used at the site of the procedure.  The combination of oral conscious sedation and local anesthetic means the patient can stay relaxed and usually allows the dentist to complete more work in one session.  This makes a more pleasant experience for an anxious patient, and can even mean less dental appointments overall.

Dental Anxiety

Do you suffer from a sleepless night the evening before your dental appointment? Well, at least you scheduled one. Dental phobia can leave a person out of the dental chair for years, which makes them candidates for gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Whether you’re a victim of dental anxiety or wish to take the edge off of a dental procedure, we have sedation options that are right for you.

Dental anxiety may leave a person in fear of pain, fear of injections, or fear that the anesthesia might wear off during a dental procedure. Fortunately, we specialize in sedation dentistry to treat patients with both a dental phobia and dental anxiety. Depending on the needs of the patient, he or she may benefit from oral conscious sedation or laughing gas (nitrous oxide).

Oral Conscious Sedation: Sit Back and Relax

While Dr. Farid Hakimzadeh will decide which medications are appropriate for your dental treatment, being familiar with the type of sedation we offer at the practice might make you a little more comfortable during your next visit. Whether you suffer from dental anxiety or desire a little more relaxation in the dental chair, our staff at Fresh Meadows Dental Care is here to make you feel as comfortable and calm as possible through oral conscious sedation.

Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you take a pill, and it’s usually taken about an hour before the procedure. This pill will make you drowsy, but you’ll still be awake and able to respond to Dr. Hakimzadeh’s questions and commands. Recovery may take a little longer with this type of sedation, and you’ll need an escort to drive you home for your safety.
